Feed

  • "We went to the moon to have fun, but the moon turned out to completely suck."
    - This statement is like the setting for the novel. You read it and you get excited because going to the moon isn't "normal", right? But then it's a let down because M.T Anderson describes the moon as having trash all over and having vaation on the moon isn't all that fun after a few trips. While on the moon, the characters are having an awful time because a) they don't have their fake ID's to get into minibars b) they stay at a crummy hotel and c) their feeds get hacked. See, normally the thought of going to the moon would be such a dream come true but a big nightmare to the characters. They went to the moon for Spring Break. To relax and have collisions with each other for fun. Not to mention get wasted but they all get hacked by an anti-feed guy and can't seem to entertain themself without the feed. If you re-read that phrase a couple of time, then you kind of get it. "We went to the moon to have fun, but the moon turned out to completely suck." It shows that the characters had high hopes for fun, but ends up disappointed. This very first sentence in the book gives you the feeling that this book will be full of disappointments. It sets the mood and gives readers an insight of the kind of feeling this novel has.

  • The language used in the book was hard to understand and follow once you start reading but if you give it some time, you start to understand why the author used such words. The characters in this novel depend on their feed for daily survival. The word choice that are used by these characters make them sound uneducated. As Titus was staring at Violet at the Ricochet Lounge, he looks at her spine and couldn't come up with a word to describe it. The feed comes to his rescue and suggests the word "supple". (pg. 14) This shows that he relies on his feed to finish his statements for him and that he can't think up a word on his own. There are a lot of "future slangs", as I like to call it. No one in this time period now calls their friend "unit". As you read, you think that the adults are more educated in the way that speak but sadly, that's a big no no. As you read on, you get an insight on Titus's father who speaks like a teenager although he's a businessman. When Titus asks about his mother, his father replies, "She's like, whoa, she's like stressed out. This is...Dude...Dude, this is some way bad shit." It shows that without the feed, they can't m-chat. If they can't m-chat throught the feed, they have to open their mouths and speak. Once they do so, it shows how poor their language usage is. It's sad, really :(
